My mother, Christi Lan Lin, is a collector of handmade children’s textiles – hats, bibs, clothing, baby carriers, and shoes.  Over time, she realized what she was actually collecting was more than the items themselves, but the stories woven into the fibers of each article.

At the same time, digital photography artist, Fumi Furuta, was carefully preserving the tiny dresses, shoes, and hats that her daughters had outgrown.  She photographed these items, creating a series of works titled, “The memory of things” – a rumination on the memories embedded in her children’s clothing, and a wistful lament over the passage of time.

My mother and Ms. Furuta became friends and it didn’t take long before she invited Ms. Furuta to look at her collection of children’s textiles.  Ms. Furuta was especially taken by the shoes in her collection and my mother offered Ms. Furuta to photograph the little shoes.  What resulted was a new series of works, titled, “Mother’s love.”

To celebrate the love that goes into children’s textiles, les enphants has collaborated with Ms. Furuta this holiday season and produced textiles from her series, which was inspired by our mother’s collection – the process has been quite like a Chinese box and its seemingly infinite drawers and secret compartments, magically unfolding!

This collaborative exhibition will be held at Heritage Café & Bakery, a building rich with history and its own story of inheritance and innovation.
